Please help? Unlocked phone?

If a phone is unlocked, does it mean that it can be used on any network? I was planning on buying a sidekick from Best Buy which claims to be unlocked and inserting my at&t sim card if that is the case? Would this work out and would I be able to access all the features? Lol, thanks in advance!
